THE ABILITY ON IDENTIFYING SIMPLE PAST TENSE IN NARRATIVE TEXT AT THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 1 LIMPASU
B. BACKGROUND
In English learning there are some genre of text. One of them is narrative text. Narrative text has a social function is to amuse, entertain, and to deal with actual or variuos experience in different ways.(Rudi Hartono, 2000:6)
Narrative text also has structure like other genres of text. But, in Narrrative text consist with orientation, evaluation, complication, resolution, and re-orientation.(Rudi Hartono, 2000:7)
In the syllabus KTSP (Kurikilum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan) at SMP Negeri 1 Limpasu, for the eighth grade, the students are expected capable to identify the Narrative text.One of the characteristic of narrative text is use simple past tense. Because of that, if the studentswant to identify whether a text is a narrative text or not? The students must have an ability to identify a simple past tense , well.
But, from the pre-research that have been done through interview with an English teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Limpasu. The information are found that many students ability to identify the simple past tense in Narrative text is low. There are some problems made the students can not identify the simple past tense. One of the problems is the students have a problem to identify whether the verb is verb II or not? The simple past tense uses regular and irregular verb. Between both of them, irregular verb is one of the dificulties verb II to identify. Because, irregular verb is not have special characteristic to each change from verb I to verb II like in regular verb.
This research is important to follow up because it is useful for students to know thier ability to identify simple past tense in narrative text. And, according to this statement, the researcher interest to conduct a research about the students ability to identifying simple past tense, with the title, “The Ability to Identifying Simple Past Tense at the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Limpasu”.
C. IDENTIFICATION AND FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM
Use simple past tense to talk about things that happened in the past.
The simple past form:
1. Affirmative
Subject + Verb II + Object + Complement
Example :
I went to Japan yesterday.
I was in Japan last year.
2. Negative
Subject + did not/ didn’t/ was not/ were not + Verb I + Object + Complement
Example:
I did not go to Japan yesterday.
We did not have time to visit to visit the Eiffel Tower.
3. Interrogative
Did / were/ was + Subject + Verb I + Object +complement?
Were they in Iceland last January?
Did you have a bicycle when you were a boy?
Students must know about the form above to identify the simple past tense in Narrative text. It is made the students confused to differenciate the verb I and Verb II. And students get the difficulties in identify simple past tense especially to identify regular and irregular verb according to trhe problem, the researcher formulates the specific problem of the research, that is : How is the ability on identifying simple past tense at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Limpasu in focusing regular and irregular verb at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Limpasu.
D. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
The objective of the research is to find out the ability on identifying simple past tense at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Limpasu.
E. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCES
The significance of the research are:
1. For teacher, the research will help the English teacher knows students ability on identifying simple past tense in Narrative text instruction.
2. For students, the result of this research are axpected help the students improve their ability on identifying simple past tense in Narrative text.
3. For other researcher, the reseult of this research are expected to be used as a reference for further research.
F. RESEARCH METHOD
1. Research Location
The research will be conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Limpasu, Jl. Madhi Kawis Limpasu. The research concentrates at the eighth grade
2. Research Design
This research will use quantitative approach and descriptive design. Tis design is choosen beacuse the research want to describe the students ability on identifying simple past tense and to collect the data will use test.
3. Technique of Data Collecting
The technique of collecting data is achievment test. The test is is in form the narrative text. And students are asked to find out some of regular and irregular verb that is written in the text. The test will be given individually and the score of each students will be the primary data of this research..
4. Data Analysis
The first step is test induividually to collect data, in this test students are asked to find out the regular and irregular verb in a narrative text. After the data are collecting the researcher will classify the result of test by finding students individual score and the mean score, and the last it will be interpreted in some qualifications.
